Washing and Acne

Contrary to popular belief, acne breakouts are not caused by being dirty or a failure to be hygienic generally. Acne is caused by clogged pores which then become infected and this usually occurs when too much Sebum is produced; therefore many acne solutions contain active ingredients to help reduce the amount of sebum produced. However, regular washing if done correctly will help you to combat your acne. It is recommended you wash your face 2-3 times per day depending on the severity of your acne. This will help reduce the spread of bacteria and minimize infections. However, washing your face any more than this can actually be counterproductive. Washing your face too much will not only dry out your skin causing it to be easily broken and fragile, but it can also irritate your face further and alter your skins PH.

It is also recommended that when washing your face you do not scrub your face dry afterwards. You may be tempted to scrub a few layers away in an attempt to feel refreshed and start over but this will only cause further damage to your skin, causing inflammations and spreading bacteria. Gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel and ensure you completely dry your face (bacteria love moisture). It may take longer to dry your face, but it will be much kinder to your skin, giving it room to repair itself properly and eliminate that stubborn acne.

There are a variety of acne products that can help you combat acne, as well as acne solutions for washing, that contain active ingredients to help reduce acne. The best way to rid yourself of acne is to use a combination of these acne products and practice regular and gentle face washing every day.

Don’t Lose Sleep over Acne

It may surprise you to learn that sleep can also have an impact on acne. We already know that a disturbed sleep or lack of sleep can cause mental distress resulting in lethargic behavior, lack of concentration, mood swings and aggression, but a lack of sleep can have other side effects too that are not so well known. One such side affect is the aggravation of acne which is a result of increased hormone levels brought on by the disturbed sleep. This increase in hormone levels increases the production of Sebum which clogs pores which then become infected, which in turn becomes acne. Hormone levels have long been associated with an onset of acne with many people suffering from acne in their teenage or pre-teen years when hormone levels are at their most unbalanced. Therefore, one of the best acne solutions for people who do not get at least 8 hours of undisturbed sleep is to go to bed earlier.

Get into a daily routine so that you go to bed shortly after using your acne products. Wash your face and treat it with your preferred acne products then unwind in bed with a book earlier than you would usually go to bed. This will prepare you for the night of sleep ahead and let your body relax and unwind ready for a good night’s sleep. Make sure you do not read for too long and ensure you get to sleep at least an hour before your usual sleeping time. You will notice a remarkable difference in your acne in a few days just from heading to bed early that extra hour. Having a night time routine makes it much easier to remember and will help mentally prepare you for bed.

Green Tea Can Help with Acne

Sunday, February 8, 2009 13:51

Green tea is one of those super drinks you hear about a lot. Green tea is famous for promoting a healthy digestive system and even promoting the loss of weight, but not many people associate green tea with acne solutions. Green tea has been tried and tested by many acne sufferers with positive results. While many people have tried out green tea and drunk it on a regular basis to combat acne, there is only one common problem with this drink that people share. Unfortunately, the taste of Green Tea is what deters people from this wonder natural ingredient. Fear not however, many high quality acne treatment products will have Green Tea present in order to promote healthy glowing skin without a bitter taste in your mouth. Green tea is known to regulate skin sebum, avoiding clogging and the development of acne because of this. Many acne products including Murad, Exposed and Rhodan & Fields all contain Green Tea to enhance the natural properties and effects of their acne solutions. This is of course, alongside many other active and natural ingredients to help combat acne.

Green tea acne solutions are also known to help reduce inflammation, and while many products supplement this with other natural anti-inflammatory ingredients such as Tea Tree Oil, Green Tea is a strong and capable ingredient for this. This means the red patchiness of your skin caused by the inflammation of the acne can be reduced leaving your skin more evenly colored and healthy.

Acne and your Diet

If you have tried various acne products to no or little success, it may not be the fault of the products. The very best acne products work with your natural diet to combat your acne and improve your skin’s condition but if you continue to eat foods that are making your acne worse, the benefits of your acne products will not be as noticeable. There are quite a few different methods of acne removal available today but acne creams and other topical acne products remain not only the most effective, but also the most natural and unobtrusive methods. Using cream acne solutions give you a much better chance of tackling your acne once and for all with a significantly reduced risk of acne scarring occurring.

Therefore, it is vital you do not get disheartened if your acne products are not providing stunning results in a matter of weeks. Make sure you accompany your washing routines and acne products with a healthy diet and investigate which foods may be causing your acne to worsen. Although no food has been directly associated with acne breakouts, many fatty, salty or caffeinated food stuffs have been known to intensify acne breakouts and that could be the one step further you need to take in order to break free of your acne problems. Your diet should keep in mind all the food stuffs that promote healthy skin and regeneration so that you can give your skin the best chance possible to recover. Additional products such as green tea can help reduce inflammation from the inside out whereas eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables will give your skin the Vitamin C boost it needs to repair itself. With both a healthy balanced diet and regular face washing with acne solutions and other supplement acne products your skin will have everything it needs to repair itself and stay healthy and acne free.

Some Home Acne Remedies

In addition to home made acne masks, there are a number of other home made acne remedies that can help reduce your acne without costing you a lot of money. Here are just a few other ways of combating acne using common household items instead of expensive acne solutions. Not every item here is guaranteed, but they may help.

  • Relax in a warm bath scented with rosemary and a blanch of nettle
  • Daub a mixture of rose water and lemon juice on your face
  • Take half a garlic clove and rub it over the affected area a few times a day
  • Wash your face with a mixture of water and avocado paste
  • Eating a grated radish with each meal has show to help reduce acne in some people
  • Drink plenty of water - some suggest adding honey or squeezed lemon to the water
  • Drink warm teas, especially rosemary tea
  • Put a few tea bags in water, add some basil, and let it come to a boil. Then daub the mixture directly onto the affected area with a cotton ball
  • Clean your face with a vinegar-soaked cotton ball. Caution: this may sting, so be careful and try it on a small area of your face first.
  • Eat plenty of carrots and cucumbers
  • Apply toothpaste to affected areas. Toothpaste will dry out the acne, making it vanish more quickly. Caution: don’t apply toothpaste all over your face because it will dry out any skin you apply it to.

Create Your Own Acne Mask

Fighting acne can be expensive, especially if you can’t seem to find a cream or other acne treatment solution that works for you. While over the counter products can be very helpful in clearing up your acne, there are some home remedies that work very well, too. Making a home made acne mask is one way of fighting acne without spending a lot of money on acne solutions.

One of these home made masks is made out of baking soda and water. All you have to do is mix up the baking soda and water together and daub it on your face. Then you let the mixture set for around ten to fifteen minutes before washing it off.

Oatmeal is another great, cheap way of dealing with acne. A mask made out of oatmeal helps clear out your pores and remove any excess oil on your skin. Just mix the oatmeal with water, apply it, and wash it off after the oatmeal dries.

Another, slightly more complex mask recipe is to purchase fuller’s earth, distilled witch hazel, and tincture of benzoin. Mix half a cup of fuller’s earth, a teaspoon of the tincture, and a bit of witch hazel together. After applying the mast, let it set for 30 to 45 minutes. By this time, the mask should have hardened. Use a damp towel to gently remove the mixture and then wash your face.

One final acne mask recipe involves two teaspoons of died basil leaves. Steep the leaves in boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes. Let the water cool, and then daub it on your face with a cotton ball. This “mask” doesn’t require washing off, so you’re free to use as much of the mixture as you’d like.

Ingredients to Look For

While standing in a drug store aisle looking at the many different acne products, you may find yourself very confused. Which are the best acne solutions? Do all of them even work? Reading the ingredients can help, but some of the huge words and unfamiliar terms may cause even more confusion. Here are three ingredients to look for when selecting an acne product (since each of these is the active ingredient, you won’t find all three in the same product).

The most common and effective ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. This product kills the bacteria that cause acne and helps to remove dead skin and other debris that can clog up your pores. Benzoyl peroxide can, however, cause dry skin, redness, and even some minor swelling, plus it may make your skin more susceptible to sunburns. Generally, a product will include between 2.5 percent and 10 percent of benzoyl peroxide.

The second active ingredient is salicylic acid. This acid slows down the shedding of skin cells inside your hair follicles. This keeps your pores open and prevents acne buildup. Salicylic acid also reduces whiteheads and blackheads. It can, however, irritate the skin and sting a bit. Acne products may contain anywhere from .5 percent to two percent of this ingredient.

Finally, the rarest active ingredient in over the counter acne products is sulfur and resorcinol. They help remove dead skin and remove any excess oil from the pores. Like salicylic acid, sulfur can also help break down blackhead and whiteheads. However, like the other acne treatment solutions, there are some possible side-effects: you may suffer peeling and some redness.

Acne and the Holidays

It may seem like you always have a huge outbreak of acne right around the holidays, the same time that people tend to take pictures.  If you’re tired of seeing your face covered with acne in every Christmas photo and using tons of acne treatment solutions during the holiday season, here are some things to keep in mind.

While it’s true the “fact” that chocolate and other foods cause acne is false, it is not a myth that food can cause acne breakouts.  Eating certain types of food may cause you to break out, but the foods that cause your breakouts aren’t going to be the same foods that cause another’s breakout.  Everyone’s body is different, and everyone reacts differently to foods.  Because we eat a lot of unusual or different foods around the holidays, we may have worse breakouts during this time.  The best you can do is try to narrow down which foods cause your breakouts and avoid them.

Stress can also cause acne, and many people are stressed around the holidays.  If you’re hosting the family gathering or stressing over buying gifts, you may experience an acne breakout.  The only thing you can do to combat this cause of acne is to try and relax during the holidays.  Don’t stress over preparing meals or finding that perfect gift.  Just take a few deep breaths and take it easy.

Finally, sweat can also cause acne by making your skin more oily and blocking up your pores.  Around the holidays, especially if you have a lot of people over at your home, the temperature is likely to rise a bit.  You may also wear sweaters and other heavy clothing that causes sweating.  Try to keep your cool during the holidays, and wash your face with a gentle facial wash twice a day to keep your skin oil-free.

An Acne Overview

Saturday, December 27, 2008 13:38
Posted in category General

Acne affects just about everyone at some point in their lives. While it’s most common in teens, it can affect people in their twenties and beyond. But what exactly is acne? Well, you get acne when the pores on your skin (generally your face, but it can occur anywhere on your body) gets clogged up with dead skin, oils, or dirt. This traps bacteria below your skin. This infection and the blockage can result in several things, including a pimple, a whitehead, a blackhead, or a cyst.

A pimple is the most common type of acne. It’s a red bump that appears when pore pushes the bacteria, dead skin, and oils up under the skin.

Whiteheads are pores that have been clogged up by oils and dirt. They bulge out from the skin, but unlike pimples, they aren’t as red. They are not inflammatory.

Blackheads, on the other hand, are clogged pores that are still open. They have a darker or yellowish surface and are caused by excess oils. Blackheads can be easily removed from the skin by using pore cleansing strips.

Cysts, however, are the worst type of acne. They’re clogged up pores like pimples, but the clog goes very deep. Cysts are generally bigger than pimples and can be quite painful. Some mistake cysts as large pimples due to their somewhat similar look.

Dealing with each type of acne can be a pain, and you may have to medicate your skin for years. However, if you haven’t discussed your acne with a doctor or dermatologist, you should. There may be some prescription medication or other options that can actually permanently cut down on the amount of acne you have.

Who Can Get Acne?

Sunday, December 21, 2008 13:37

Acne is very common, especially among teenagers. However, just about anyone can experience acne no matter what age—even people in their fifties and sixties can develop acne. Acne is caused when the pores on your skin get plugged up. These pores may be on your face, neck, back, chest, arms, or even legs—basically, anywhere on your body.

Anyone of any age, race, or occupation can get acne, although some may experience more acne than others. People with very dry skin, for example, sometimes have more acne issues than others. Moisturizers may help these individuals control their acne. Likewise, diet and stress can affect acne, although the same types of food or the same level of stress will not affect everyone the same.

But what causes acne to get better or worse? Well, no one actually knows for sure other than the blocking up of pores. It’s hard to determine exactly when a pore will become clogged and when it won’t. There are, however, some contributing factors.

First, teens often experience worse cases of acne than others because of their changing hormone levels. Some teens experience worse acne than others, but generally, by the time they reach their late teens or early twenties, the worst of the acne will be cleared up.

Rubbing your skin harshly can also lead to more acne. This is why it’s important to gently wash your face and avoid harsh soaps. Likewise, if you’re around anything that dries out your skin or irritants your skin, you may experience more acne than others.

If you pick, squeeze, or pop your acne, this can also make it worse. Allow your acne to vanish naturally or apply topical creams—do not pop it as this can make your acne either last longer or cause permanent scars.
