Acne and the Holidays

It may seem like you always have a huge outbreak of acne right around the holidays, the same time that people tend to take pictures.  If you’re tired of seeing your face covered with acne in every Christmas photo and using tons of acne treatment solutions during the holiday season, here are some things to keep in mind.

While it’s true the “fact” that chocolate and other foods cause acne is false, it is not a myth that food can cause acne breakouts.  Eating certain types of food may cause you to break out, but the foods that cause your breakouts aren’t going to be the same foods that cause another’s breakout.  Everyone’s body is different, and everyone reacts differently to foods.  Because we eat a lot of unusual or different foods around the holidays, we may have worse breakouts during this time.  The best you can do is try to narrow down which foods cause your breakouts and avoid them.

Stress can also cause acne, and many people are stressed around the holidays.  If you’re hosting the family gathering or stressing over buying gifts, you may experience an acne breakout.  The only thing you can do to combat this cause of acne is to try and relax during the holidays.  Don’t stress over preparing meals or finding that perfect gift.  Just take a few deep breaths and take it easy.

Finally, sweat can also cause acne by making your skin more oily and blocking up your pores.  Around the holidays, especially if you have a lot of people over at your home, the temperature is likely to rise a bit.  You may also wear sweaters and other heavy clothing that causes sweating.  Try to keep your cool during the holidays, and wash your face with a gentle facial wash twice a day to keep your skin oil-free.
