Does Windex Help Acne?Friday, November 14, 2008 11:46
Fans of the movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” know about one rather unusual treatment for removing pimples. So, does Windex really help heal a zit?
In the movie, the father Gus (portrayed by Michael Constantine) recommends Windex for solving all medical problems big and small. His prospective son-in-law Ian (John Corbett) takes his advice and uses Windex to spray away a pimple that appeared on the morning of the wedding.
Unfortunately, like most things in movies, the remedy was just a bit of literary license. Windex and similar window cleaning products are a mixture of ammonium hydroxide and alcohol. This mixture may dry up the pimple, but it will also leave skin red and raw.
Another home remedy may work: Many people find that toothpaste can help dry out pimples. Use plain white toothpaste – not whitening toothpaste or a gel. Apply it at night and the pimple could be gone — or significantly reduced – by morning. Do not try this method if you have sensitive skin.
If you get a pimple on your wedding day, or on another special occasion, your best bet is to see a dermatologist or a general practitioner who may be able to give you a shot of cortisone. If no doctor is available, try using a facial mask then skillfully apply makeup to cover up the blemish.
Getting a pimple on your wedding day may seem like a big deal; however there are very easy ways to deal with it that don’t involve spraying cleaning fluids on your face. Use skin products approved for facial use and enjoy your big day.
